Why Many Houston Schools Are Still Music Deserts

When you think of Houston, you think music everywhere — symphony halls, jazz clubs, even Zydeco nights at your favorite bar. But step into some Houston public schools, and you might not hear music at all.
According to the Houston Chronicle, nearly 1 in 5 schools in HISD have no music or fine arts teacher. No choir, no band, no strings — just silence where music could be sparking creativity and confidence.
Budget cuts have made it worse. As pandemic relief funding dried up, money for instrument repairs, partnerships, and enrichment programs has been cut back. Principals are left to piece together funds or go without, and too many students are missing out on the power of music altogether.

Find the music at Houston Boychoir!
For over 60 years, Houston Boychoir has been a part of Houston's music culture. Through rehearsals, performances, collaborations and mentorship, we provide boys with
top-tier music education — no matter what their school offers.
Our singers learn vocal technique, music theory, and stage presence while performing with Houston’s leading arts organizations. They travel, represent Houston, and grow into confident young leaders.
For many, this is their only opportunity to experience music at this level — and it transforms their lives. Auditions are currently open for boys 8-12 Come join us!
Help Bridge the Gap
This year, the rising need for scholarships has created a $50,000 gap between what we have and what is needed to support every boy who has earned a place in the choir. We never want finances to be the reason a boy misses out on this opportunity.
Donate today. Share the message. Be part of the bridge.
Help us say YES to every boy who dreams of singing.

We build men of character through music.
