Request an Audition. Auditions are held monthly throughout our season (September–May), with additional dates available in the summer (June–August). Houston Boychoir also visits school campuses upon request to hold auditions.

The Audition Process

Auditions last about 15 minutes and are designed to be fun, relaxed, and pressure-free. No prior experience or preparation is required. Our staff will guide your son through simple vocal exercises while getting to know both his voice and his personality. Your son will feel comfortable, supported, and proud of what he can do.

The audition includes:

  • Demonstrating vocal range and pitch matching

  • Repeating rhythmic and musical patterns

  • A brief interview to learn more about the boy’s interests

  • Houston Boychoir is a premier choral organization with a mission to develop young men of character through the transformative power of music. For over 60 years, HBC has served Houston-area families by providing exceptional musical training and meaningful performance experiences. 

    The program is structured in three progressive tiers: 

    ● Preparatory Choir – our entry-level ensemble for new members 

    ● Chamber Choir – for boys with at least one year of experience and advanced readiness

    ● Olde Boys – our high school ensemble for young men with changed voices 

    Together, these ensembles offer a supportive and inspiring environment where boys grow musically and personally.

  • Boys are eligible to audition if they are at least 8 years old and in 3rd grade or above. 

  • Parents can request an audition through the onlne form located on the auditions page of our website. After you’ve submitted your request, an HBC director will confirm your son’s upcoming audition via email.

  • Auditions are about 10–12 minutes long. Boys do not need to prepare anything in advance. A director will guide your son through: 

    ● Vocal warm-ups to determine range 

    ● A familiar song to assess tunefulness 

    ● Pitch memory and rhythm exercises 

    ● A short, friendly conversation to get to know the boy

  • Preparatory Choir rehearses weekly onMondays, 4:45–6:15 PM and monthly one Saturday a month, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM in the Museum District. 

    Chamber Choir rehearses weekly onMondays and Thursdays, 6:00–7:30 PM and monthly one Saturday a month, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM in the Museum District. 

    Olde Boys rehearses weekly on Thursdays, 6:00–7:30 PM and monthly one Saturday a month, 10:30 AM–12:00 PM in the Museum District. 

  • Typical annual performances include: 

    ● Winter Concert (December) 

    ● Sing4Life Concert (February) 

    ● Spring Concert (May) 

    ● National Anthem at two sporting events (Texans in the fall, Astros in the spring)

    ● Day Trip performance (first Saturday in May) 

    ● Additional performances may be added throughout the year as invitations arise.

  • Every member pays annual tuition, which is supplemented by generous donations from our community. Payment plans and scholarships are available, and no child is turned away due to financial need.

    Preparatory Choir tuition: $850 for the full season includes: 

    • Weekly rehearsals and monthly workshops 

    • Printed music 

    • Houston Boychoir polo and T-shirt 

    • Day trip (bus, activities & formal dinner) 

    Need-based scholarships are available. 

  • Participation requires a one-year commitment, active engagement in rehearsals and performances, a collaborative spirit, and a willingness to embrace feedback as part of the learning process.
