2023 Houston Boychoir Benefactor's Luncheon Honoring Carole Nelson

We are producing a short video for the 2023 Annual Benefactor’s Luncheon Fundraiser, honoring Carole Nelson. The event will be held in Houston on
March 31, 2023, and we want to include you!

Taking part is SUPER EASY! We are looking for a diverse sampling of voices to Honor Carole Nelson as she retires after 31 years and to let our supporters know What Your Experience with Houston Boychoir Means to You. Just follow the filming instructions and submit your video files today.

Show Ms. Nelson some Love.          Deadline extended, February 20, 2023.

How to film your Video

Please read the instructions below on how to best record your videos.

READY?

We would like you to film on a smartphone! Please, no selfies. Find someone to help you film. They will be the Cameraperson, and you will be the Interviewee. If you can’t find a person a tripod would work. If you don’t have a tripod, find something to balance your phone on to eliminate camera movement. Please keep the distance between you and the phone about 3 feet apart.

LIGHTS!

Make sure there are no windows behind you, or else the footage will have white, blown-out backgrounds and you will be a silhouette. Ideally you should have some light source on your face, be it from a window or desk lamp.

CAMERA SETTINGS!

Be sure that your camera is set to record the following settings:

iPhone: 1080p HD at 30 fps    Photographic style: Standard

Android: 16:9 FHD 1920 x 1080 p 30 fps

If you need help setting up your camera, please see How to Change Camera Settings.

ROLL SOUND!

The best tip for having good audio is to avoid any sort of distracting background noise. Try to record in a relatively quiet place — but avoid the echo of an enclosed room as well.

ROLL CAMERA!

The Cameraperson should hold the phone in landscape mode, not like a cell phone, like a TV. The camera should be eye level with the person talking. Make sure the camera is steady. It is best to use a tripod to hold the camera but if you don’t have one, the Cameraperson should find something to balance the phone on

and hold it steady. If you are in an open area and there is nothing to balance the phone on, use both hands to grip the phone, and keep their elbows close to their body to keep the shot as steady as possible. When ready to shoot, the Cameraperson should tap the your face on the phone screen to focus and lock exposure. If you record one video per question, the upload process will likely be
a bit easier.

ACTION!

Shoot as many takes as necessary and review the footage between them to make sure your video looks good.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Be enthusiastic and positive!

  • Humor is a plus :)

  • Restate the question in answers

  • Film in *visually appealing* locations

  • If you have any other video footage or photos from Houston Boychoir events - feel free to upload as well! Be sure to distinguish these with file names.

Usage agreement

Please note that while we will include as many voices as we can, not everyone will make it into the final cut of the video. See our quick footage release verbiage below. This is really just saying we have your permission to use your likeness and footage in the video to play at the event — and then post it online.

I hereby authorize Houston Boychoir to use and edit the submitted video content — my name, likeness, image, voice and participation in and performance on film, tape or otherwise for use in the stated project above or parts thereof. I agree that the footage may be edited and otherwise altered at the sole discretion of the Producer and used in whole or in part for any and all broadcasting, non-broadcasting, audio/visual, and/or exhibition purposes in any manner or media.

What to say in your Video

Please answer the first question and one or more of questions 2-6. It may be best to write out your answer first, and do a practice run so you are comfortable speaking and you don’t start rambling. If English is not your first language, you are welcome to submit in the language of your choice! Also, it is important that you restate the question in your answers (ex. I support Houston Boychoir because…). It will probably be easier to upload one video per question, since the video files can be large.

  1. What do you want to thank Ms. Nelson for?

  2. Who are you? Yes, we want your first name, but who are you in a broad sense? How long have you been associated with the Houston Boychoir and, what do you do for a living (if you are a student, what are your career goals)?

  3. What did you learn from Houston Boychoir that you use today?

  4. Why is it important to be involved now?

  5. What does Houston Boychoir mean to you and why is it important to be involved now?

  6. Please finish the following sentence: "I support Houston Boychoir because…"

How to upload your Videos

When finished with your video(s), please upload them here: Alumni Dropbox Submission
